It certainly is time to celebrate the successes of our Lake City students in We Act. We had a modest beginning in 2013. This year our efforts have been much more effective. We began our year with to Orange Out Campaign to stand up to bullies and stand united with those who have been targeted or experienced mean behavior.
We Scare Hunger brought 387.4 pounds of food and $100 to the Lake City Food Shelf. This effort started our year long commitment to address food insecurity on our own community. Tom Brinker from Free The Children spoke to We Act and Key Club. Students got an overview of Free The Children, Me to We and We Act. Tom inspired us and empowered us to make a difference. He also guided us through a planning session after the speech. 20 incredible students attended We Day Minnesota on November 12. It was a great day. Students saw inspirational speakers and had some great entertainment. The only drawback was that we could not take more students. The penny wars were a great success. This is a traditional 9th grade activity but we expanded it to middle school this year. Half of the money raised went to the Lake City Food Shelf. The other half went to Free The Children to purchase goats for families in our adopted village. Finally, we baked for change. Students and other volunteers made baked items to sell before our holiday choir concert. Many thanks to everyone who participated. This effort helped us provide 5 more goats. Currently students are continuing to plan for upcoming events and working concessions. Great job for an incredible 1st semester. Keep up the good work. We still have more to do. |
